(17-05-2008)

HA NOI — A trade association of GSM mobile phone service operators has ranked military-run mobile operator Viettel 56th out of 648 GSM networks worldwide as of March 2008.

Wireless Intelligence, which represents GSM network operators in 217 countries and territories, forecast that by 2010 Viettel was positioned to become the 30th largest mobile network in the world with around 36 million subscribers.

Viettel, owned and operated by the People’s Army, currently ranks first in market share, with about 35 per cent of the nation’s 48 million mobile phone subscribers. It is followed by MobiFone (28 per cent) and Vinaphone (23 per cent). Viettel reports adding over a million new subscribers per month in the first quarter of 2008, raising its total number of subscribers to 17 million.

Its latest marketing pitch, called Viettel Privilege, offers post-paid users a number of incentives such as free log-on to add-on services and discounts at Viettel partner shopping centres and restaurants nationwide. Viettel has also announced its Reading Newspaper service, which allows subscribers to read ten leading online newspapers via GPRS handsets. — VNS
